Aziewicz: We are a group of friends of Lithuania in the Polish Sejm

@ DELFI

The role of the Polish part is to remind of the commitments resulting from the treaty concluded between Poland and Lithuania – said in the interview for ‘Salon Polityczny’ in the Radio ‘Znad Wilii’ Tadeusz Aziewicz, a chairman of the Polish-Lithuanian parliamentary association in the Sejm of the Republic of Poland.

‘The Polish-Lithuanian parliamentary association was established to improve Polish-Lithuanian relations. It was hard for us in the beginning because we did not have counterpart on the opposite side. Presently, there is a different situation; not for long there is a Lithuanian-Polish association in Vilnius functioning under the directorship of a member of the Seimas, Michał Mackiewicz – Aziewicz explained.

‘I have conducted only one conversation with Mackiewicz during which I suggested deputies from Lithuania visit me in Kashubia where we use binomial nomenclature and nobody opposes to it. I want to proudly tell that we have bishop Antanas Baranauskas Street in Lithuanian language in Pomerania’ – the politician emphasized.

Aziewicz stressed that the parliamentary assembly acts pursuant to the treaty concluded by two independent countries, Poland and Lithuania, that includes the number of mutual commitments and the role of the Polish part is to remind of them, especially those applying to the rights of the Polish national minority.

‘The job of he Polish-Lithuanian parliamentary association is to search for what is common; it is a group of friends of Lithuania in the Polish Sejm. The past was difficult for both nations and therefore the way to normal European interaction may be long but we need to strive to obtain it by any possible means.

Aziewicz stressed that the results of the election in Lithuania obligate the Lithuanian government to take care of the interests of the Polish minority

‘In the coalition agreement concluded by AWPL (Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania)  there are demands connected with the Polish minority and for that reason we have to wait for the effects of the new government activity and we wait in hope for the positive settlement of these problems’ –  expressed his hope Tadeusz Aziewicz, a chairman of the Polish-Lithuanian parliamentary association in the Sejm of the Republic of Poland.
