On Friday, the mayor of Warsaw Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz and the vice-mayor of Vilnius Jarosław Kamiński signed an agreement on cooperation between twin cities in the Warsaw City Hall.

“Last year, we celebrated the 15th anniversary of the cooperation between our cities, which means that we have much experience in working together. I believe that the agreement on cooperation between twin cities will serve as a counterbalance to conflicts between politicians that frequently occurring. The agreement between the capitals of our countries, which are connected by a common history spanning across hundreds of years, indicates that we pursue the united Europe, that we still want to cooperate, be friends with each other, and take care of our good relationship. The Polish community in the capital of Lithuania has really good conditions to preserve its cultural and national identity,” said the vice-mayor of Vilnius Jarosław Kamiński.

Both mayors emphasised the importance of cooperation in terms of economy and energy, and experience in exchanging knowledge. The cities have successfully cooperated in terms of culture, education, health care, tourism, local economy, public safety, and public transport.

The first cooperation agreement between Vilnius and Warsaw was signed on April 1, 1998. Last year, the mayor of Vilnius Artūras Zuokas and the mayor of Warsaw Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz signed a declaration on signing the agreement on cooperation between twin cities.
