Lithuania: more teachers of mother tongue in minority schools

In secondary schools work most of the teachers of Lithuanian language (3 517), English (3 458) and mathematics (2 854). During the last five years has decreased the number of teachers of all subjects, especially teachers of science, technology, physics and astronomy, history, religion, Lithuanian language, Russian and French. At the same time has  increased the number of teachers of mother tongue in schools of national minorities and teachers of economics, foundations of civil society, music and dance.

In the school year 2013-2014 in Lithuania were 51 000 teachers. Within 10 years, their number has decreased by almost 18 000, that is ¼. Such data is quoted by the Lithuanian Department of Statistics.

In the last school year the number of teachers and school principals was 34 400, including 633 pre-school teachers, 7 500 teachers of initial  grades, 23 100 teachers of 5-12 grades of secondary schools and 3 100 school principals and their deputies.

In secondary schools in positions of teachers and school principals usually work women. In 2013, they constituted 87% of teachers employed in schools.

Seniority of two-thirds (76%) of teachers in secondary schools is 15 years and more. The average age of teachers in these schools is 48 years. At the beginning of the school year 2013-2014, more than half – 53.2% teachers in secondary schools reached the age 45-60 years. Young teachers (under 30) constituted only 4.5%, while older than 60 years ones – 10.8%.

In the second quarter of the year 2014, the average gross payment of the teacher was 2 640 litas. It was about 337 litas more than the national average payment.
