„Aukso vainikas” Folk artist’s exhibition in Nemenčinė

Over 100 of folk artists from the Vilnius County took part in a competition and exhibition “The Golden Laurels” (lit. Auksinis vainikas), which this time took place in the Cultural Centre in Nemenčinė.

The exhibition, initiated 8 years ago by the Lithuanian Centre of Folk Culture, every year takes place in a different corner of the former Vilnius County. As the member of the jury, doctor Terese Jurkuviene said that the rules are formulated in such a way that the exhibition helps to promote and maintain these forms of creativity, which have their roots in ethnic and regional traditions.

—The works presented on our exhibition can be seen as the golden fund of our country’s folk culture— said dr. Jurkuviene. She added that the exhibition was an unusual event and it was a pleasure for the organisers (including the Self-Government of Vilnius Region and the Cultural Centre in Nemenčinė), the jury members, the visitors, and the artists.

Wood sculptures, belts, woven and knitted works, stained glass windows, haberdashery items, ceramic items, Vilnius palm trees, paintings and works of artist blacksmiths were presented on the exhibition.

As Gienadij Fedorowicz, an employee of the Etnographic Museum of the Vilnius Region in Nemenčinė, who was the host of the event, emphasised, it is a pity that the exhibition in the town near the Neris river was opened only for a few days and not everyone who was interested managed to see it.

The jury has decided that this year the symbolic golden laurels will go to Genovaite Varanackiene, Aldona Stunguriene i Pranas Petronis. The honoured artists will represent the Vilnius County on the national exhibition of folk artists, which will take place in Ukmergė.
