Changing Nationality in Lithuania Will Be Now Easier

Lithuanian Parliament is urgently proceeding with a project on facilitating the change of the nationality entry in identity documents.

The project was supported by 76 MPs, 19 voted against, and 31 abstained from voting.

The draft assumes that the entry of nationality can be made or changed if a person wants to take the nationality of one of the parents or grandparents.

If parents decide to change the entry of the child’s nationality, it could be done by mutual agreement if they are of different nationalities. Similarly, if the entry of nationality on the birth certificate had not yet been made at all, it could be done by mutual agreement of the parents.

The draft also provides for the possibility of deleting the entry of nationality. The agreement of the parents could also cancel this entry.

The author of the draft is the Ministry of Justice.

This is not yet the final vote in the Parliament on this issue.
