“Syrokomlówka” on a straightway to lower secondary school

The Władysław Syrokomla High School has started the process of accreditation of the curriculum of high education. The council of Vilnius informed, that the application of accreditation was addressed to the  Ministry of Science and Education. The school is applying for a status of, so called, long lower secondary school from the firsts classes to the last ones finishing with the high school finals with humanistic nature.

“Addressing the application to the ministry in the matter of accreditation the curriculum of high education in this educational institution is the realisation of activities included in the reorganisation of the chain of schools plan. We are going to transform the Władysław Syrokomla High School into the long lower secondary school which will realise the program of humanistic nature. Then, if the school successfully undergoes the accreditation process, it will be allowed to assemble classes from 1 to 12” –  the quotation comes from the press announcement of the Vilnius council of the deputy mayor of Vilnius Valdas Benkunskas who is responsible for the education.

The authorities of the city, for a longer period of time, were keeping “Syrokomlówka” in suspense when it  comes to its future. At the beginning the school was applying for accreditation for a lower secondary school of “education with Christian elements” nature, but the authorities of the city, as a condition demanded to get a partner in a catholic environment. The Vilnius Curia did not agree, though.

In spring in 2016, during the meeting in the Ministry of Education, there appeared a suggestion which should be taken into consideration about the possibility of changing the nature into humanistic. The school community had fears, if it manage to prepare a new conception, but finally it appeared that it was capable to do it. Now the decision depends on the accreditation commission, which will assess if the school is prepared enough.

The Władysław Syrokomla High School is the biggest, general education Polish institution in Vilnius. Currently it has 851 students in classes, from preparing ones to the last ones finishing with the high school finals with humanistic nature. Last classes have 82 students, this year 70 students started first classes. In school, there has been operating for 46 years the Song and Dance Group “Wilenka”, which is its prominent symbol.
