Home Army commemorated in Vilnius

A plaque to honor the Home Army of the Vilnius County “Wiano” and the Novogrodek County was presented on Sunday the 28th September in the House of Polish Culture in Vilnius. The ceremony coincided with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Polish Underground State (27th September) and the 63rd anniversary of the death in martyrdom of Aleksander Krzyżanowski (“Wilk”), the commander of Home Army’s Vilnius County.

A collection was organized by the borders officials and workers of the Polish Border Guard to found the plaque, which was made from brass and granite by Marcin Nowak. The plaque was presented by the Border Guard Colonel Krzysztof Gawęda and combatants, the president of the Association of the Home Army Soldiers in Belarus captain Weronika Sebastianowicz (“Różyczka”), Aleksander Krzyżanowski’s daughter Olga Krzyżanowska and the president of the Polish Ex-Combatants’ Association in Lithuania Lieutenant Edward Klonowski.

After the presentation, there was a performance by the Representative Orchestra of the Nowy Sącz Border Guard. Then everyone attended a Mass in Ostra Brama which was held in memory of the commander Aleksander Krzyżanowski (“Wilk”) on the 63rd anniversary of his death, all of the soldiers who died for their country and with a request to Our Lady of Ostrobrama for health and peaceful life for all alive veterans from the Vilnius and Novogrodek County.

There was also an exhibition dedicated to the Polish Underground State prepared by the Vilnius Patriotic Youth and it will still be available to the public for a few days in the House of Polish Culture in Vilnius.
