The President of Lithuania talks with the chairman of the Court in Strasbourg about human rights

The President of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaitė, met with Dean Spielman, the Chairman of the European Court of Human Rights in the Strasbourg, Egidijus Kūris, the judge of the Court from Lithuania and Roderick Liddell, the administration superior. During the meeting they brought up issues concerning consolidation of human rights protection and the cooperation of Lithuanian courts with the European Court in Strasbourg.

The President of Lithuania pointed out that opinions of the Court are valid because they improve Lithuanian legal system and strengthen the protection of human rights in Lithuania. Dalia Grybauskaitė emphasized that Lithuania with the other members of the Council of Europe should take action so that the provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights are obeyed which eventually leads to the decreasing number of complaints filed to the Court.

As press service of the President of Lithuania informs, in the nearest future Lithuania will ratify new amendments to the European Convention on Human Rights which will tighten cooperation between Lithuania and the Court in Strasbourg.

Professor Egidijus Kūris from Lithuania works in the European Court of Human Rights in the Strasbourg. He began his 9 year term of service in November, 2013.

Lithuania has been criticized for years for negligence in human rights protection, including the rights of ethnic minorities.

The European Court of Human Rights in the Strasbourg is a European international judicial authority called into being in 1959. It gives opinions in cases of human rights as written in the European Convention on Human Rights and additional protocols.
