Kirkilas: The meeting of the Polish-Lithuanian Assembly will take place after the adoption of the Law on National Minorities
The Vice-Chairman of the Parliament Gediminas Kirkilas confirmed that a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Sejm and the Polish Senate and the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania will depend on whether the Lithuanian Parliament adopts the Law on National Minorities.
“This is how we decided that this meeting will be held if the law is to be adopted in September, and it is very likely to occur. If it succeeds, the meeting will take place in October,” told zw.lt Kirkilas.
According to the Social Democrat, the Law on national minorities can be adopted in one day. “Today, we sent another request to the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language. Within a week we get a response, and if everything is clear, this law can be adopted in one day,” explained the Vice President.
On Tuesday Kirkilas returned from an official visit to Warsaw. The Vice-Chairman of the Lithuanian Parliament, after a meeting with the Deputy Speaker Eugeniusz Grzeszczak, said that the meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Sejm and the Polish Senate and the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania will be held in October in Warsaw.
Polish party set, however, their conditions. The meeting will be held, but only after specific actions on the rights of national minorities in Lithuania. “We look forward to introducing repeatedly announced, specific changes leading to a real improvement of the situation of the Polish minority, which opens the way for normal cooperation in the framework of the Assembly” commented on the situation for zw.lt the Member of Polish Parliament Tadeusz Aziewicz.
However, in an interview with Radio G. Kirkilas said that in the present geopolitical situation more important is safety, not the spelling of names. “It seems to me that the problem of spelling should be resolved and if it is resolved in such a way as in Poland towards Lithuanian minority and in accordance with the bilateral agreement, everyone will forget about this case the next day,” told the Žinių Radijas G.Kirkilas.
The politician added that there is no sense in “shredding the details that in the future will be no use to anyone.”
“Today, for us, for Poland, for Baltic countries, more important are the security issues” stressed G.Kirkilas.
