Restoration of the Black Angel at the old Rasos cemetery

Restoration works of one of the most beautiful monuments at the Rasos cemetery – the Monument of Iza Salmoniczówna otherwise known as the Black Angel – will begin soon. The 110-year-old Monument is now in miserable condition.

Last year the Social Committee for Maintenance of the old Rasos cemetery made effort to gain permission for the restoration works. After 8 months they received the permission.

“We have finally obtained the permission. We owe it to the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage which sent a letter to the authorities in Lithuania. The Chief Inspector of the Agency for Preservation of Monuments also lent us a helping hand. We are very grateful to the Minister Małgorzata Omilanowska and the Chief specialist Krystyna Marczyk for their help. Preliminary works have already started. At the beginning of September monument conservators will come from Poland and the works will begin. The Monument will regain its original appearance” – said the Head of the Social Committee for Maintenance of the old Rasos cemetery Alicja Klimaszewska.

The restoration works are financed by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The works should be completed in September.
