It is possible to support people punished for bilingual street signs

The account on which everybody can pay money adding a note “Solidarność” to support the people punished for bilingual street signs has been opened on the initiative of Vilnius District Branch of the Association of Poles in Lithuania in the DNB Bank. Financial support can be given in Lithuanian litas, zlotys, euros or US dollars.

For more information read the interview with the mayor of Šalčininkai District Municipality, the leader of the Association of Poles in Lithuania of the Šalčininkai District, Zdzisław Palewicz:

In November 2013 the Board of the Šalčininkai District Branch of the Association of Poles in Lithuania aspiring to give support to people punished for the bilingual street signs decided to organize a fundraiser among people of goodwill. We started a new bank account for this purpose on which all people sympathizing with the ones punished for bilingual street signs can pay money in litas, zlotys, euros and US dollars. The account is marked with a meaninguful note “Solidarność”. The bank account number is provided on the website of the Association of Poles in Lithuania, as well as in the press. We want people to sympathize with the punished ones and support them financially because those enormous fines that a director Bolesław Daszkiewicz was given and the 45 000 litas ticket are reprehensible but impossible for one person to pay from his own pocket. That is the first point. Secondly, we have to live in sympathy together and this refers to us all, the whole community and we need to defend our rights because we are again dealing with repressions and violations of basic human rights, the right to use one’s own national language too. We all know it very well that Polishness is not something that can be easily ripped out of our hearts. However, today we are forced to pay for using Polish language and this is what we are going to do.
