On Monday, 22nd April 2013, the constituent Congress of the European Alliance of Tatars was organized in the European Parliament under the auspices of the Member of the European Parliament and the leader of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania, Waldemar Tomaszewski.

Not only the representatives of the Tatar community (over 50 participants) took part in the meeting, but also Members of the European Parliament and other guests were present. During the Congress, separate Tatar organisations, their history and culture were presented. Moreover, the most significant problems and expectations of Tatars were discussed. The declaration, the regulations and the charter of the European Alliance of Tatars were adopted during the meeting and the representatives of particular countries of Europe were elected.

In the welcome letter addressed to the participants of the Congress, the Member of the European Parliament Waldemar Tomaszewski wrote among other things:

“The history of the Tatar community in Europe has a centuries-old tradition. Tatar culture and customs have become an inherent part of the history of European civilization. Multiculturalism and multi-ethnicity is precious heritage of Europe. It is under special protection of the European Union, whose motto is “United in diversity”.

The leader of AWPL expressed satisfaction with the fact that together they had managed to organise in the European Parliament the historic, first constituent Congress of the European Alliance of Tatars. “I hope that this Congress will mark the beginning of the development of the Alliance of Tatars in all Europe and will become an efficient tool to promote Tatar culture, language and traditions. As a Member of the European Parliament representing inter alia  national minorities of Lithuania, I perfectly understand your efforts to protect ethnic values, which are highly important in order to preserve Tatar identity in constantly changing Europe” – wrote Waldemar Tomaszewski.
