The Court in The Hague Declares Russian Invasion of Ukraine Illegal

The International Court of Justice in The Hague has reported that Russia’s attack on Ukraine was illegal.

The Court rejected Russian accusations of genocide in eastern Ukraine and issued an interim measure ordering Russia to suspend all military action.

The decision was announced by ICJ President Judge Joan E. Donoghue.

The International Court of Justice is a United Nations judicial body established to resolve disputes between states. The judgments of this Court are not subject to appeal.

On 26 February, the Ukrainian government petitioned the Court to classify Russia’s attack on Ukraine as an act of genocide and, at the same time to reject Russian accusations that Ukrainian troops committed crimes against the Russian minority.
