Nausėda: I Would Like to Repay the Lithuanian Poles

Lithuanian President-elect Gitanas Nausėda, who was a guest of the “Political Salon”, claimed that in many international affairs Lithuania’s position is convergent with that of Poland, moreover, he added that may visit Šalčininkai in the near future.

The president-elect informed that he managed to quickly build his team and in general, all those who were offered posts in the presidential administration accepted them. “Among my advisers there will be one responsible for the issues of national minorities. Whether it will be a person responsible only for these issues, or also for some additional matters, is yet to be seen. However, such a person is needed,” said Mr. Nausėda.

The future leader of Lithuania is very pleased that he received a lot of votes in the elections from local Poles. “Their support was even greater than in other parts of the country. I think that it happened that way because we spoke to these people with a language they understand. It is worth underlining that my consistent position on the original spelling of surnames on the second page of the passport did not scare off my  Polish voters. I believe that they understood my arguments. On the other hand, I have never been too categorical and I have not insisted that it always has to be the way I want it to be. I think that I will repay the local Poles by visiting them in the near future,” explained Mr. Nausėda. The president-elect suggested that he could visit one of the Polish schools.

Mr. Nausėda will go to Warsaw with his first official visit and recently he highlighted that the security sector is an important element of cooperation with Poland. Mr. Nausėda remarked that Poland and Lithuania have convergent positions regarding Ukraine, Russia, and Georgia.
