Kubilius is also defending the Konwicki street

After Government representative in Vilnius County, Vilda Vaičiūnienė announced that she will check if naming the street in the Pustołówka village (Zujuny borough,Vilnius Region) with the famous polish film director and writer Tadeusz Konwicki is not against the law, The Polish Discussion Club made a statement in this matter, reminding about the merits of the artist and insinuating the authorities of Vilnius to name street with his name. Deputy Andrius Kubilius, the founder of May 3 Group has written an open letter to the Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis and to the Mayor of Vilnius Remigijus Šimašius. We publish the whole letter.

‘I am asking for immediate correction of political and human mistake, which has been made by the The government representative in Vilnius region Vilda Vaiciuniene, publicly and officially discrediting righteousness of the decision of Vilnius District Municipality about naming one of the streets with Tadeusz Konwicki, a famous polish writer and movie director, coming from Vilnius surroundings’.

The Polish Discussion Club’s open letter shows who Konwicki was, in what way was related to Lithuania and what does he mean for the polish culture in the 2nd half of XX century.

Public mistake of government representative could be treated as a personal mistake and misunderstanding, if it would not happen based on power of attorney of ‘government representative’ and at the same time making impression that she is supported by the whole government. It causes diplomatic and international problems, which should be solved by superior of government representative.

Dear Prime Minister

I am sure that you express different beliefs than government representative, so I am calling for actions and immediate correction of the mistake that has been made. Not only taking back the actions of government representative, but also to do what has been proposed by Polish Discussion Club: Proposing Mayor of Vilnius Remigijus Šimašius to name one of the Žemasis Pavilnys (historical town close to Vilnius) streets with Tadeusz Konwicki.

Dear Mayor

I hope you do everything to memorialize the name of Tadeusz Konwicki in Vilnius. It would show that authorities of Vilnius care about all that national communities care about in Vilnius.
