Alicja Klimaszewska nominated in the competition „The Guard of the National Heritage”.

Alicja Klimaszewska who is the chairwoman of the Social Care Committee of the Old Rasos Cemetery, was nominated to the award and the title of ‘Mieczysław Gębarowicz Guard of the National Heritage’.

On 29 September 2015, in the Senate of the Republic of Poland the ceremony of granting the awards in the 3rd edition of the competition to the award and title of „The guard of the Republic of Poland’s heritage” Custos Monumentorum Rei Publice will be held. This title is granted to persons and institutions having special merits in protecting and preserving the Polish national heritage in country and abroad.

Alicja Maria Klimaszewska is an inhabitant of Vilnius. She was born on 23 January 1936 r. She is a graduate of the 5th Middle School, which has a hard time nowadays. It was the only Vilnius educational institution with the Polish teaching program after the II WW. In 1956, she graduated from the Teachers’ Institute in Naujoji Vilnia, whereas in w 1960 she finished external studies on the Pedagogical Institute in Vilnius. She worked as a teacher in the Vilnius and the region’s schools as well as in the Polish bookstores.

From the initiative of Jerzy Waldorff, together with Halina Jotkiałło, Olgierd Korzeniecki and Jerzy Surwiło she established the Social Care Committee of the Old Rasos Cemetery, of which she is the chairwoman. The Committee’s activity is mainly the care of the Rasos monuments and their renovation. During 20 years of activity, owing to Committee’s efforts, more than 50 monuments were renovated and 4 more were built.

In 2002, for her social activity, Alicja Klimaszewska was awarded ‘honored for the Polish Culture’ medal by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland and in 2014 she received the Award of prof. Aleksander Gieysztor from the Kronenberg Foundation.

The competition of the Award and Title „The Guard of the National Heritage” was constituted by the speaker Bogdan Borusewicz in2013. The aim of the competition is honoring the people and institutions in country and abroad who contribute in a special way to preserving our national and cultural heritage. Apart from senators, in this year’s edition, organizations, foundations and institutions who act on behalf of care of the Polish cultural heritage, its revalorization or promotion could submit their nomination.
