The surname “Tomaszewski” remains in Šalčininkai. The Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Lithuania rejected the complaint filed by social democrats.
The Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Lithuania rejected the complaint filed by Šalčininka social democrats, and the name of the Coalition of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania and the Russian Alliance “Tomaszewski’s Bloc” remains on the ticket. The head of the Šalčininka social democrats, Darius Skusevičius, while addressing the Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Lithuania was certain that the name was against the Municipal Elections Act. There should be the word “coalition” in the name of a coalition, and there cannot be the names of parties or surnames that are not the part of a coalition.
Šalčininka social democrats claimed that there was a candidate named Tomaszewski at the number 3 on their ticket, and on the ticket of the Coalition of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania and the Russian Alliance that surname figured only in the name. According to them, such a situation may confuse the electorate.
The arguments of social democrats did not convince the Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Lithuania.
“We left the previous name. We discussed and voted for a long time. There are two reasons behind our decision. First: the decision was made earlier, and it would not be appropriate to change it. Second: a discrepancy in names of candidates in one case should not mislead the electorate” – said the chairman of the Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Lithuania, Zenonas Vaigauskas, to the Elta agency.
Šalčininka social democrats may challenge the decision of the Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Lithuania in the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania.
“We are planning to go to court, but we do not think that the court will be able to render any decision before the elections; however, it will be a precedent for the future” – commented Skusevičius.
