The Minister of Justice, a social democrat Juozas Bernatonis is going to submit a proposal to the government this month concerning the original spelling of surnames in documents.

On Monday, after the government meeting, the Minister told journalists that currently, the discussions whether the mode of the spelling of surnames is going to be adopted as a law or in some other forms are still in progress.

“I have met with experts who work in the working group responsible for the original spelling of names. I think that in this month we will certainly submit a proposal to the government” – said Bernatonis.

“At this moment I cannot say anything because we have a few variants (…). This issue will be settled for sure, settled in a civilized way, without breaking the Constitution, in accordance with European traditions” – the Minister added.

In 1999, the Constitutional Court of Lithuania stated that “a name and surname of a person in the passport should be written in the official language”. This  decision was confirmed by the Constitutional Court once again in 2009.
