23th of September – another rally ?

Another protest in defense of minority education in Lithuania is due to take place on September 23rd. So, this time, it will be held outside the Lithuanian Parliament. A permission request to organize the five-thousand-strong rally has already been put forward to the local government body in Vilnius by a group of Polish parents. A decision on this is to be made by next Wednesday.

Today the first meeting of an Education Committee, which is to cooperate towards finding solutions for improvement of Polish education in Lithuania, took place in Druskininkai. “The Education Law should be suspended and amended. That is our stance and it has been put forward to our representatives in the Committee”, declared a Deputy for Electoral Movement of Poles in Lithuania, Jarosław Narkiewicz.

Narkiewicz has also clarified which elements of the Education Law, approved in March by the Lithuanian Parliament, are main concerns. These in question are articles 30 and 38, defining education principles in ethnic minority schools. According to the Lithuanian Poles, realization of these rules would lead to liquidation of Polish schools in Lithuania.
