Lithuanian government appointed Deputy Minister for National Minorities

The Lithuanian government established a new position in the Department of Culture: the Deputy Minister for National Minorities. At the same time Widtmann Stanislaus, a former Deputy Director of the Department of National Minorities and Immigrants in the Lithuanian government, was appointed for this position.

The preliminary decision on the creation of the new position was undertaken in late July, but now a specific person was appointed – Stanislaw Widtmann, a Lithuanian citizen of Polish nationality.

Two years ago the Department of National Minorities and Emigration in the government of Lithuania was closed down. This caused great dissatisfaction. “We want to give the utmost importance to the problems of national minorities once again”, said Minister of Culture, Arunas Gelunas.

In Lithuania, the minorities constitute about 16% of society. Poles are the largest the largest group, making up about 7% of residents.
