Conservative Vice Mayor: We do not have negative attitude towards any school

A new Vice Mayor of Vilnius, Conservative Valdas Benkunskas, who will be responsible for education and energy, promised that no Polish school would be closed, as the website 15min.lt reports.

„We do not have negative attitude towards any national minorities, nor towards any school” – stated the Conservative and added that there would be no hasty decisions being made at the first meeting of the council.

Vice Mayor explained that the representatives of Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania and the associates of the previous Mayor, Arturas Zuokas, threatened before the elections that the Conservatives would close Polish schools. The first school that was to have been closed was Joachim Lelewel High School, the legendary ‘school no. 5’. The Conservative added that the new authority will have to conduct the optimization of Vilnius school network, which is demanded by the Education Act.

On Tuesday, the representatives of the Liberal Movement, Social Democrats, Justice and Order and ‘Lista Litwy’ signed the coalition agreement of the council of Vilnius.

Liberal Linas Kvedaravičius, Conservative Valdas Brnkunsas, and Social Democrat Gintautas Paluckas were appointed Vice Mayors.

The Director of the Administration of Vilnius will be a non-partisan, former head of the exhibition and conference centre Litexpo, Darius Aleknavičius.

Aleknavičius will be responsible for the fields of sport and culture, informal education, development of city, and environment protection; Benkunskus for energy and education; Paluckas for health, public order and social affairs.

According to the agreement, the Liberals will fill the committees of culture, education and sport, environment, economy and finance, national communities, and development of local government. The Social Democrats are likely to receive the position of the head of the Health committee. The Control committee will be traditionally taken by the opposition, and, perhaps, it will be led by the representative of Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania.
