In Vilnius alone, a thousand of teachers is missing
Hunting season – this is how spring and summer are called in the pedagogical environment. Almost every school in Lithuania lives in the rhythm of finding teachers. Some schools lack up to ten teachers. Principals suffering from this mystery say they are doing everything they can to keep teachers who have been preparing for retirement for many years.
The biggest problem with the lack of teachers is in the capital. In September, Vilnius alone will lack 298 subject teachers, 296 educational support specialists, 168 pre- school educators, 34 pre- school educators, 58 primary school teachers and 114 teaching assistants. In total, it is almost a thousand employees. Such data is provided by Donalda Meiželytė, Vice Mayor of the city of Vilnius
Shortages in educational support specialists are a serious problem, because inclusive education starts in September, which means that children with special needs will also attend classes.
Donald Meiželytė also informed that a decision is being prepared by the council in Vilnius, allowing school principals to offer higher remuneration than the one set by the ministry when looking for teachers and educational support specialists such as speech therapists, psychologists, and social pedagogues. The City Council is expected to decide on this matter in early June.
