A referendum on dual citizenship will take place in May 2024
The referendum on the legalization of dual citizenship will take place on the 12th of May, 2024. The referendum is planned together with the first round of the presidential election.
The following provision of the Constitution will be approved in the referendum: “Citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania is acquired by birth and on other grounds and in the manner provided in the Constitution. The Constitution also determines the grounds and procedure for the loss of citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania”.
In this way, the ban on dual nationality would be removed from the main law of the country.
An amendment to the Constitution relating the citizenship will be considered as adopted if more than half of the citizens entitled to vote will vote for it.
Dalia Asanavičiūtė, a politician from the Conservative Party, who prepared the referendum initiative, said that at the moment there will be over 1.1 million Lithuanian citizens.
In 2019, together with the presidential elections, a referendum was already held, with the purpose of extending the possibility of dual citizenship, but then there were not enough votes to accept such a provision.
