Lithuanian culture cultivated abroad

The ministry of education is holding a contest aimed at Lithuanians abroad for projects which will help children in Lithuanian schools outside the country keep up ties with Lithuania, retain and cultivate their national identity, give more possibilities to learn Lithuanian, and learn more about the Lithuanian history and culture.

The contest, which is organized for the second consecutive year, is designed for Lithuanian schools and other educational institutions registered abroad. The applications may be submitted until 10 Jan 2015.

The Ministry of Education is going to finance the projects which will have a long-lasting effect. First of all, the priority is to strengthen the cooperation among Lithuanian schools abroad as well as the cooperation between those schools and other educational institutions abroad or in Lithuania. Support will also be given to the projects which are aimed at extending teachers’ knowledge, creating and purchasing didactic and methodical materials, and popularizing the institutions’ activities.

“Lithuanian education, that is learning about language, culture and history, is something that connects Lithuanians living abroad with their homeland. We are glad that we can help Lithuanians living in various countries across the world to feel as part of Lithuania”, says Mr Dainius Numgaudis, the Chancellor of the Ministry of Education.

In 2014 the ministry held two contests for projects aimed at improving the Lithuanian education abroad. The winners received over 600 thousand litases (approximately 173,772€). In general as many as 83 projects in 23 countries received financing.

The ministry plans to organize such contests every year.
