Works on the National Minorities Act are said to be completed soon

The prime minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevičius in order to discuss the current issues met with the representatives of the minority communities, the councils of the community of national minorities and the representatives of the academic community.

During the meeting the agreement was reached on the institution that would coordinate the activity of the minority communities. It was also agreed that the works on the National Minorities Act are to be completed as soon as possible.

„It was agreed that the works on the National Minorities Act should soon be completed and that it should meet the expectations of all the minority communities. This requires cooperation and goodwill.” – said the prime minister pointing out that the government aims to improve the quality of life and the integration of all citizens of Lithuania.

According to the government press office, during the meeting it was agreed that the project of the act, presented by the working group chaired by the deputy minister of culture Edward Trusewicz, required corrections. The process of making corrections to the project of the act is going to be supervised by the governmental office in consultation with the representatives of the academic community and the political scientists.

„We’re going to improve the project in order to give as much freedom as possible to the minority communities, but the government will be introduced such a variant that is consistent with the Constitution and existing legal acts.” – said the first deputy chancellor of the government Remigijus Motuzas.
