“Polonia” Wilno counts on further help

© Marian Paluszkiewicz

It has been a month since the football team “Polonia” Wilno (Futbolo Klubas Polonija) made an appeal for the financial support. The sports club lost its sponsors and there is a probability that it will be forced to resign from playing in the first League in Lithuania.

Recently the financial situation of “Polonia” Wilno has slightly  improved. Nevertheless, the team still counts on help from the generous donors. The Chairman of  the team, Stefan Kimso in the interview for “ Kurier” pointed out that until now (2nd October 2013) donors transferred about 8 400 Lithuanian litas.

– Hiring a football stadium just for one match costs about 1 500 litas. So far the sum of money that we possess will be enough to hire the stadium for five matches – said Stefan Kimso. Most of the money transfers are from Poland, we are also supported by fans from Lithuania. We received financial injections even from Switzerland and Sweden.

Although the Chairman of the sports club “Polonia” Wilno admits that the situation is quite tough, he is very glad about the fact that there are more and more people who are not indifferent to the football team from the Vlinus Region. Among the most generous donors he favored the Chairman of the Suwałki Region sports club, Mr. Dariusz Mazur. He donated for “Polonia” Wilno 1000 Euros.

– I also want to express my warm thanks to Mr. Michał Gackowski and Mrs. Paulina Jankowska who not only generously supported the team, but are also our big fans. In the previous year they were present at almost all of the “Polonia” Wilno`s matches, although they had to go from Poland. This year they have been to Great Britain but they are still with us wholeheartedly, what we really appreciate – said Stefan Kimso. Besides the individual donors, the financial support is lent by different organizations and companies. One of the latest financial injections – 1 000 zlotys – came from a Polish company Budbaum Mosty i Drogi Sp. z o.o.

Unfortunately, the SC “Polonia” Wilno needs definitely bigger sum of money to survive. Otherwise the team is exposed to bankruptcy. In spite of that sad fact, the spirit team is still alive and the players will do their best.

– The main goal for now is to survive till the end of the season and to do well in the Lithuania Football Cup. We will do our best to achieve these goals  – said Kimso.

The sports club “Polonia” Wilno has contributed to the development of polish sports in Lithuania for almost 25 years. The team is very proud of the advance to the first league of the Championships of Lithuania, the title of World Championships of Polish Diaspora (1990), four – time winning the World Summer Olympics for Polish Diaspora (2001, 2003, 2005, 2007) and other medals won in these games.

This year, in spite of the financial problems, the management of the club took the decision about taking part (for the second time in a row) in the games of the 1 League of Championships of Lithuania.
