The introduction of the amendments to the criminal law, allegedly preventing exerting pressure on the parents of the Vilnius District to send their children to Polish schools, is yet another provocation whose aim is to stir up society and aggravate the Polish-Lithuanian relations – assesses the vice-president of the Seimas, Jarosław Narkiewicz.

Presently, the Criminal Code anticipates punishments for actions restricting political, economic, social, cultural and professional activities. Meanwhile, a group of conservative deputies aim at introducing punishments for restricting one’s freedom of choice.

MP Kęstutis Masiulis admits this proposal has come into existence in connection with the Vilnius Region where – as he points out – the parents are forced to send their children to the Polish schools in order not to lose their benefits.

Then, according to the vice-president of the Seimas, Jarosław Narkiewicz, the abovementioned statement by K. Masiulis is defamatory and discriminatory.
