Memorial plaque in Butrymańce commemorating one of the January Uprising leaders
On 18th August on the initiative of Soleczniki unit of the Association of Poles in Lithuania a memorial plaque will be unveiled in St. Michael the Archangel Church in Butrymańce. The plaque commemorates one of the January Uprising leaders – Bolesław Kajetan Kołyszko.
Bolesław Kajetan Kołyszko was born on 26 July 1837 in Karmaniszki, near Butrymańce. He was baptized in a church in Butrymańce. During the law studies at the Moscow University he was a member of revolutionary student organization “Ogół”, together with Zygmunt Sierakowski and Tytus Dalewski.
He was arrested in 1861 for the participation in a student demonstration but he managed to get to Italy where he joined the Polish military school. He returned to Lithuania in March 1863 and organized his detachment near Kaunas and fought at Aukštadvaris, Lencze, and Misiuny. The insurgents were defeated in the battle of Biržai. Bolesław Kołyszko was imprisoned and sentenced to be shot. Murawiow-’Wieszatiel” changed the sentence to hanging. The sentence was executed on 28 May in Vilnius at Łukiski Square.
