On Wednesday (July 4) Dalia Grybautskaitė, the President of Lithuania, vetoed the amendments to the Law on the territorial administrative units of the Republic of Lithuania and their boundaries which were adopted by the Parliament. The Law allowed establishment of new local governments even when in particular district live 7.000, not 10.000 of citizens.

“Citizens do not need more bureaucracy, they need authority operating effectively and understanding their problems. It is necessary to strengthen the role of municipalities and local communities, not to create jobs for politicians interested in them” – stated the President of Lithuania. According to her, small and weak governments will not be able to provide their residents with qualitative conditions.

PL DELFI recalls that last week the Parliament adopted amendments to the Law on the territorial administrative units of the Republic of Lithuania and their boundaries, reducing the minimum number of residents of a new local government from 10.000 to 7.000. With these amendments, the Pabradė district could be established, in line with the region’s inhabitants.
