The Podbrodzie Region-the new self governinig unit in Lithuania will be established within next few years. „Vilniaus diena“ writes that it is going to be the 61st self government in Lithuania.

Last week the Parliament adopted amendments to the statue on administrative and territorial units and its borders by decreasing the number of inhabitants from 10 000 to 7 000.

In Podbrodzie the survey has been carried out and other statutory requirements have been fulfilled. The permission of Swieciany Region local government where Podbrodzie belongs now, is necessary to establish the new self governing unit

According to „Vilniaus diena“ the establishing of Podbrodzie Region will be the only result of the local governments reform.

Talmont: The inhabitants were the initiators

Leonard Talmont, vice-chairman of Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania told PL DELFI that establishing of new self governing unit is a very positive trend. “The inhabitants were the initiators. I find it obvious that if the inhabitants want the new self governing unit to be established, we should support them. As far as I know, 30 or 40 years ago this Region had his own territorial unit”-said Leonard Talmont

High percentage of inhabitants of Podbrodzie Region are Poles so Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania could govern or govern jointly the Region. “There is no official statement of Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania. This is my personal point of view. I think that Electoral Action will have strong position in the Region” – stated Leonard Talmont.
