By 2015, Lithuania will set up a new local government. Opening of the 61st administrative unit is planned due to the initiative of the residents of Pabradė.

Over the next few years, the 61st local government – the Pabradė district – is to be created in Lithuania. But first, the Parliament of RL has to make appropriate amendments to the Law on the territorial administrative units of the Republic of Lithuania and their boundaries, reducing the minimum number of residents from 10.000 to 7.000. MP Valentinas Stundys believes that it’s not enough to change this one law, it will be necessary to change also the others. “Formation of a new local government takes a very long time” – emphasized the deputy.

Creating a new local government is an initiative of the citizens of Pabradė. According to the politicians, forming a new administrative unit by 2015 is the only point of the entire local government reform in Lithuania which will be implemented. According to the previous plans, the Vilnius Region Govenment was to be cancelled, but Cytautas Kurpuvesas claims that this will not happen for the fear of possible charges of harming national minorities.

In Pabradė lives a large number of Poles, which enables the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania to govern the newly formed local government after the local electoral campaign in 2015.
