„Adventure with the Polish language”. Polish Language Competition for the 3rd and the 4th grade

Małgorzata Kozicz

47 Vilnius schools students took part in the 4th edition of the Polish Language Competition for the 3rd  and the 4th grade. Today at Wł. Syrokomla High School the competition’s results have been announced and the winners have been awarded the prizes. Dominik Zamuszkiewicz from Wilia School-Kindergarten was the best among the 3rd grade students and Katarzyna Patrycja Liman from Wł. Syrokomla High School became the winner among the 4th grade students.

“I hope this competition was one of the greatest adventures with the Polish language for the students. I am grateful to the teachers for preparing the students for the competition as well as for the fact they make these children love the Polish language, they are careful about its purity and correctness and discover its secrets together with the students. There is no other good that is as common and significant for us as a mother tongue” – Danuta Silienė, Wł. Syrokomla High School principal said during the finale of the competition.

Tasks for the youngest participants were divided into two parts – text understanding exercises and grammar and spelling exercises. The exercises were formulated by the Vilnius schools teachers on the basis of the school curriculum.

“We started it from scratch four years ago and we still work on it like this – we put what we think up. We rather do not get any guidelines or advice from above. We try to provide a level that is not too high and not too low. Nobody got a hundred percent of the points. The difference between particular scores was not big, the children were well-prepared. The competition involves the children as well as the teachers. I believe we need that, I am glad such a competition is held” – Maria Dunowska, the lower grades teacher at J.I. Kraszewski Junior High School, the member of the working group said to zw.lt.

Mrs Dunowska says that the lower grades students are more eager to take part in the competition  and show more enthusiasm than their older fellow students.

„That is a battle in three fronts. A child who goes and deals with the exercises is the first front. A teacher who prepares the child is the second front. Parents’ actions are considered the third front. The family certainly plays a significant role in what children can achieve in the competition” – Maria Dunowska emphasizes.
