Vilnius: Candidate to EP Destroyed Plaque Commemorating Gen. Vėtra

The plaque commemorating a Lithuanian army officer Jonas Noreyka – General Vėtra, hanging on the building of the Wróblewski Library in Vilnius, was destroyed on Monday. It was shattered with a sledgehammer by a candidate to the European Parliament, lawyer Stanislovas Tomas.

The Mayor of Vilnius, Mr. Šimašius announced that he was not planning to reconstruct the plaque, and he has deemed Tomas’ action as an act of hooliganism.

The removal of the plaque commemorating Gen. Vėtra, who was a Nazi collaborator, has been a subject of the public debate for a long time.
