Skvernelis: I will do anything to reset relations with Poland

The candidate for Prime Minister of the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union Saulius Skvernelis defines Poland as a strategic partner and says he will make every effort to reset the current poor state of relations with that country.

“I have always said that Poland is our strategic partner and I will never conceal that, also for the defense of our country, it is one of the closest and most powerful NATO army” – said Skvernelis on Thursday, during his address to members of Parliament, answering the question by Jarosław Narkiewicz, a member of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania, on the relations with Poland.

„In the immediate vicinity, we have a large, very rapidly growing, economy, whose potential is not being used. I believe that relations established in the recent years – I would not say they are very bad, but they are definitely not neighbourly – should be changed. I will make every effort, as long as it falls within my competence, to change the relations with that country – underlined the candidate for Prime Minister.

On Thursday, the President presented Skvernelis’ candidature for the post of the head of the Cabinet of Ministers.

In his speech Skvernelis stressed that he wanted to create a “brave, united, competent, transparent and responsable government of changes.” He added that he will work „in favor of ordinary people and for the elites.”

He mentioned family-friendly policy, fight agains violence and compulsory military service as his priorities.
