Gediminas Kirkilas: the Parliament did not concretise the question considering the names of representatives of national minorities

The chairman of the parliamentary Committee for Europe Gediminas Kirkilas said that he is going to ask the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language once again about the original spelling of names of representatives of ethnic minorities.

Kirkilas says that in the earlier application the Parliament did not clearly formulated the question about the original spelling of names of representatives of ethnic minorities, but a positive statement of the Commission about original spelling of the names of foreigners and persons who have entered into marriage with them, he called “a step forward”.

“We talked with the Commission about the fact that the request of the Parliament was not concretised with respect to national minorities. The first step was taken with respect to foreigners, especially Lithuanian women that marry them. In addition, we will turn to the Commission about other Lithuanian citizens who have documents proving the original record of the names,” said Kirkilas to BNS.

The State Commission of the Lithuanian language agreed to record the names in foreigners’ passports and in the passports of persons who have entered into marriages with them, with non-Lithuanian diactrical marks.

In other cases, the Commission proposes to maintain the “principle of recording the names according to the sound.”
