The finale of the contest „The best school – the best teacher”

Today, 27th November, the summing-up of the XIX edition of the contest “The best school – the best teacher” will be held in the Community Centre of Polish in Vilnius.

The best schools in Vilnius, in the district towns and the region of Vilnius, Soleczniki and Troki were bet separately in this year’s contest. Not only is the contest (organized by the Association of Polish Schools’ Teachers in Lithuania “Macierz Szkolna” (“School Matrix”) for many years) the list of the best Polish educational institutions, but it is also a study of  Polish education standing.

According to Józef Kwiatkowski, the chairman of the Association of Polish Schools’ Teachers in Lithuania “Macierz Szkolna” (“Schools Matrix”) and the parliamentary representative, the contest is important for Polish educational system in Lithuania and especially for Polish education.

He also adds that the act of proving that schools in which lessons are taught in a mother tongue are better than those in which lessons are taught in Lithuanian, is the fourth, but not the least, reason of the ranking. Such schools were established in Vilnius by the government, as a counterbalance to Polish educational system.

–          The results of our contest proves that a school in which lessons are taught in Polish is unrivalled to a governmental school – stresses, the chairman of the Association “Macierz Szkolna” (“School Matrix”).

The contest vetting comprises all Polish Junior High Schools, Highonsideration when the first edition of the contest was held. The criterion was connected with the number of students who got into universities. Then, the grade of State Exams was added as a next criterion. Now, 13 criterions are taken into consideration when the schools evaluation is made. The participation of schools in contests , international and nationwide competitions, as well as those organized by “Macierz Szkolna” (“Schools Matrix”) is the criterion which was added in this year. Chairman Kwiatkowski notices that this criterion was taken into consideration in previous editions. However, it’s obligatory in this year’s edition. It is the reason why the schools which students come in first, second or third received extra points in the general contest qualification.

The results of the contest are shown around 14th October every year, when National Education’s Day is held. The Day is colloquially called Teacher’s Day. National Education Committee (Komisja Edukacji Narodowej) was established on 14th October 1773, and in Polish, the event of showing contest results takes place in the same day. KEN initiated the reform which aim was to improve education in Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narodów. Schools and Primary Schools. The vetting criterion includes numerous indices such as results of Matura Exam, continuation of education at universities or colleges and the participation of schools in nationwide contests and competitions.
