Ministry of Justice will wait for another explanation from the Constitutional Court and then will continue the work on the Regulations on Spelling of Names and Family Names in Documents – said Minister of Justice, Juozas Bernatonis.

The State Commission of the Lithuanian Language stated yesterday that they cannot accept a document which allows to write down names and surnames in official documents using non-Lithuanian diacritic signs.

‘The Commission cannot accept a document which is in opposition to the Constitutional Court’s ruling from 21 October 1999’ – as it was written in a special statement. According to the Constitutional Court’s ruling, names and family names of Lithuanian citizens shall be spelled in national language only.

Minister of Justice assesses that the Commission didn’t consider changes in society within last two decades. On application by J. Bernatonis the Constitutional Court will explain non-Lithuanian family names’ spelling problem again.

The current government, the AWPL (English: Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania) is also member of, has pledged to solve the so called Polish problems (bilingual names, original spelling of family names, etc.).
