Linguists: In documents names only in Lithuanian

The State Commission of the Lithuanian Language stated on Monday that they cannot accept a document which allows to write down names and surnames in documents using letters which don’t exist in the Lithuanian alphabet.

‘The commission decided that the document which is in opposition to the Constitutional Court’s ruling from 21 October 1999 cannot be accepted’ – as it was written in a special statement.

In June the government proposed that the Commission would prepare the directives which would regulate the usage of non-Lithuanian letters in formal papers.

The Constitutional Court explained that in formal documents name and surname must be written down in the national language.

The current government, member of which is also AWPL (English: Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania), undertook to dissolve so called Polish problems (bilingual names, original spelling of names, etc.).
