Leonard Etel, rector of the University of Białystok took the initiative to establish Border University Network which will gather universities from Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. The Vilnius branch of University of Białystok (UwB) will also be a member of the network within the framework of the project.

“It’s obvious we participate in the project as one of the University of Białystok faculties. We have an agreement signed with the university in Grodno. We also tried to sign the agreement with the Vilnius University but it has been put aside for Autumn. Though, rectors of universities met unofficially in May – informed Jarosław Wołkonowski, dean of the Vilnius branch of the University of Białystok.

J. Wołkonowski hopes that, thanks to the network, students from Latvia and Belarus will come to study in Vilnius.

“We already tried to establish contact. So far we don’t have students from these countries. If the Latvian citizens want to study at our university they will be studying on the same principles as other European Union members. Students have often their own opinion on these issues and understand better what is proper for them” – explained Jarosław Wołkonowski.

Dean of the Vilnius branch of the University of Białystok added that there were several cases like this.

“A girl from Puńsk studied at our university, she had passed the Matura exam in Lithuanian ant then she chose our university. She had studied here for three years” – said Wołkonowski.

The enrollment at our branch of the university will last until the end of September. We have currently 56 students at economics faculty and 17 at computer science.

The Border University Network will join together eight universities: from Kaunas in Lithuania, from Grodno and Brest in Belarus, from Lviv and Ternopil in Ukraine and from Kaliningrad and Voronezh in Russia. The agreement on establishing the network will be signed on 10 October 2013 during the new academic year’s inauguration at University of Białystok.
