There will be a monument for the heroes of January Uprising erected at the center of Eišiškės The works will be finished by the end of this year.

The monument erection will be financed and supported by Poland, part of its cost is covered by the municipality fund. At the same time there will be tidy-up and arrangement works at the City Park carried out at the Square in the Park where the monument will be erected.

“The curate of Eišiškės Rev. Józef Horbaczewski proclaimed the provisional government manifesto at the Square. The insurgents – led by Ludwik Narbutt, son of Teodor Narbutt, the Eišiškės church architect – gathered here. Elwiro Andriolli – the Italian painter  – fought (along with the others) in the Eišiškės guerrilla group” – told us the vice-mayor of Šalčininkai Region Andrzej Andruszkiewicz, who is the author of the monument honoring the insurgents project.

” There will be 4 pedestals at the base of the monument, symbolizing 400 years of the both nations common history: the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Rus and Samogitia; and the Kingdom of Poland. There will be two huge plinths at the base of the monument, decorated with the Lithuania’s and Poland’s national emblems – as a symbol of common history being the base of two contemporary countries. A bell will be part of the monument too, it is to remind our citizens about the heroic past of their ancestors, and to motivate them to working towards the future” – says Andrzej Andruszkiewicz.

The Eišiškės residents should always remember, in the Šalčininkai District Municipality vice-mayor opinion, that the city played a significant role throughout the Lithuanian history.

In addition, the memory of the insurgents will be honored in Butrimonys village. There will be a plaque exposed at the local church in memory of one of the uprising leaders – Bolesław Kajetan Kołyszko, who was born there, not far away from Butrimonys and was baptized in the church.
