Tomaszewski: Meeting of Polish and Lithuanian minister of foreign affairs – success for Sikorski

The meeting turned out to be a success for Tomasz Sikorski, who, consistently, for years has been helping with resolving problems of Poles in Lithuania – said the leader of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Waldemar Tomaszewski.

“It’s a success of both Radosław Sikorki and his politics” – commented Tomaszewski, on the Thursday’s meeting of Radoslaw Sikorski and Linas Linkevičius in Warsaw. Tomaszewski reminds that few years back, Sikorski had stated that he wouldn’t meet with Lithuanian minister of foreign affairs unless Lithuania takes some serious steps in resolving problems of Poles there.

Sikorski kept his Promise, as the former Centre-Right Government of Lithuania did not even tried to resolve our issues” – said Tomaszewski, who hopes that declarations made by the current Centre-Left Government of Lithuania concerning Polish minority in Lithuania will not be forgotten and that the authorities of Lithuania understand that “the first meeting of Ministers, may turn out to be the last one”.

The leader of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania highlights the determination of Polish community in Lithuania. “Unless the amendment to a bill on national minorities and education is quickly implemented, and the urgent alterations in the “Matura” exam of Lithuanian in schools of national minorities are done, we will even consider leaving of the ruling coalition” – said Tomaszewski. He pointed out that “Poles want only to keep what they have had for the last 20 years during the independency of the country”.
