Zdzislaw Palewicz, the mayor of Šalčininkai district municipality, says that he is not going to comment on the offer submitted by Stanislovas Buškevičius, the deputy mayor of Kovno and the head of “Young Lithuania” (”Jaunoji Lietuva”) as he has more important matters to attend to.

“We really have a lot to do and we are not going to deal with cases presented under false political pretences,” said Zdzisław Palewicz, the mayor of Šalčininkai district municipality, to PL DELFI. “We do not react to frivolous offers,” he added.

The deputy mayor’s help

Yesterday, the leader of “Young Lithuania” and the deputy mayor of Kovno declared his future assistance in removing all Polish signs in Šalčininkai district municipality without charge. “We can infer from press information that the local government in Šalčininkai has no money in the budget allotted to this project. We understand the region’s tough financial situation and that is why the members of the “Young Lithuania” offer help, from the bottoms of our hearts and without charge. We will organize self-help and with our own resources we will help remove signs with foreign inscriptions,” Buškevičius stated.

The leader of a right-wing party made an appeal to Zdzislaw Palewicz, the mayor of Šalčininkai district. “We would be very grateful if you considered our offer and informed us about your decision,” statement says.

The mayor said that he had more important matters to attend to than reacting to that sort of appeals. “There are many errands to run. It’s the beginning of the year. These are mainly financial matters, planning out our resources,” the mayor explained.

The Šalčininkai region is planning to realize a series of ambitious enterprises. “We are glad to announce that a restoration of the Balinski Palace in Jašiūnai is about to begin. We managed to take care of it. Also, the restoration of the central square and the stadium are planned. We want a normal pitch, straightened up, with pavements. We’re planning a restoration of community centers in Dziewiniszki and Rudniki. We also plan to build from scratch a community center in Kolesniki,” said Zdzislaw Palewicz about regional plans.

On Monday, the District Administrative Court in Vilnius ordered that the administration of the Šalčininkai district municipality should remove all Polish signs within a month. The verdict is not legally valid and mayor Zdzislaw Palewicz announced that he would appeal against the decision to the supreme court.
