Butkevičius on the National Education Act

© DELFI

Algirdas Butkevičius, the speaker of the future government of the Republic of Lithuania, said in the Seimas that the implementation of some regulations on national minorities may be postponed.

“Some regulations of the National Education Act may enter into effect later.”, said Algirdas Butkevičius today. In an answer to the question if the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania (EAPL) has raised the issue of national minorities during the coalition talks, the social democrat claimed that the act still needs to be proofread and examined more thoroughly.

The previous government passed the amended National Education Act in 2011. The national minorities representatives, including EAPL, opposed firmly the practice of teaching selected subjects in Lithuanian in national minorities’ schools; and introducing in 2013 a standardized A-level exam in official language in both Lithuanian and non-Lithuanian schools.
