The chairman of the Committee of Foreign Affairs in Lithuanian government Emanuelis Zingeris expressed his worry because of the damaging of the tables with Lithuanian names of places in the commune of Puńsk by the unknown perpetrators. At the same time he appealed to Polish and Lithuanian politicians to make an effort in order to oppose to nationalism and radicalism.

At night, from Sunday to Monday, the unknown perpetrators damaged 28 tables and one monument in 14 places of the commune of Puńsk, and on this monument they painted a sign of pre-war nationalistic organization Falanga. It is known that the commune of Puńsk is mainly populated by Polish Lithuanians. This act of vandalism (this time from Polish side) had wide repercussions in Polish and Lithuanian media.

The chairman of the Committee of Foreign Affairs in Lithuanian government Emanuelis Zingeris sent a letters to his Polish colleague, member of parliament Andrzej Halicki. In this letter the Lithuanian politician called everybody to undertake all possible actions to fight with nationalism and radicalism, which cast a shadow over Polish-Lithuanian relations.

The hooligans’ excess was condemned by the Department of Justice of Poland and Lithuania and also by the prime minister of Lithuania Andriusa Kubiliusa. This incident was also condemned by the Polish minister of Justice Krzysztof Kwiatkowski. Yesterday Kwiatkowski met in Warsaw with the minister of Lithuanian Department of Justice  Remigijus Šimašius and discussed the matter of spelling of the street names in places populated by Polish minority in Lithuania.

During the meeting, Kwiatkowski expressed his assurance that thanks to these settlements of Polish public prosecutor’s office, the identity of the perpetrators of this ‘shameful act’, which took place in the commune of Puńsk, will soon be known.
